Position Summary

*Seasonal Labourer Opportunity*

**This competition will remain open for the entire season with majority of the recruitment occurring within the first quarter of the calendar year until a full staff complement has been reached; however, applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Throughout the season, there may be a requirement to recruit additional staff dependent on operational needs**

Season Duration: The season typically runs from May to October, dependent on weather

*Note: Students resuming post-secondary classes in the fall will be granted an early layoff to return to school

Position Summary: This position performs entry level labourer duties within the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department for various branches which include:

  • Cemeteries, Golf and Landscape Trades
  • Forestry, Horticulture and Pest Control
  • Parks Maintenance

All successful candidates will be required to perform physical labour outdoors in all types of weather. Depending on operational needs, the position may require working non-standard hours, including weekends.

All candidates must possess the following:

  • A valid Saskatchewan Class 5 driver’s licence
  • Self-starter and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • A proactive team member that contributes to a positive work environment
  • Exercise initiative and good judgment when completing work assignments
  • Proven customer service skills
  • Be dependable and reliable

Parks Maintenance

Job Duties: This position consists of general labour maintenance duties at all city parks, school grounds, arterial road medians and boulevards, traffic islands, buffer strips, utility easements, floodplains, natural areas and walkways. The typical duties include litter-picking, string trimming, irrigation system operation, graffiti removal, painting, turf management, tree and shrub maintenance, rototilling, garbage handling, flower planting, shovelling soil or other material, weeding, cleaning depots and other general labour duties in the open space and depots. 

Education & Experience:

  • Experience using string trimmers, mowers, pruning saws, rototillers and hand tools 
  • Valid Pesticide Applicators Licence is considered an asset but not a requirement

Typical Rate of Pay:

  • $16.34 per hour, with opportunities to advance to $22.94 per hour, depending on operational needs 

Landscape Trades

Job Duties: This position consists of general labour construction duties and equipment operation at various locations. Typical duties include: sod laying, concrete work, furniture installation, soil leveling, interlocking stone and any other assigned duties. 

Education & Experience:

  • Experience in landscape construction, operating heavy equipment and use of hand/power tools
  • Valid 1A or 3A Licence is considered an asset but not a requirement 

Typical Rate of Pay:

  • $22.94 per hour, after successful completion of training

Cemeteries

Job Duties: This position conducts general labour maintenance duties at either the Regina Cemetery or the Riverside Cemetery. The typical duties include litter-picking, string trimming, irrigation system operation, painting, turf management, tree and shrub maintenance, rototilling, garbage handling, flower planting, shovelling soil or other material, levelling graves or monuments, weeding, cleaning depots and other general labour duties.

Education & Experience:  

  • Experience using string trimmers, mowers, pruning saws and operating turf trucks 

Typical Rate of Pay:

  • $16.34 per hour, with opportunities to advance to $22.94 per hour, depending on operational needs 

Irrigation Services

Job Duties: Under the supervision of the Irrigation Worker II or III, this position performs a variety of preventative, emergency and restoration maintenance to various components, which make up the City of Regina’s Irrigation systems located at parks, boulevards, medians, athletic fields, golf courses and cemeteries. Typical duties include: repairs and or replacement to irrigation lines, valves, sprinkler and fitting, operates and maintains City vehicles, specialized equipment and tools related to irrigation, and assist in overhauling specialized irrigation components including pumping equipment, control equipment, meters and sprinklers. 

Education & Experience:

  • Experience or exposure to commercial irrigation equipment and experience using hand or power tools

Typical Rate of Pay:

  • $22.94 per hour, after successful completion of training

Forestry

Job Duties: The City of Regina Forestry team is assigned to maintain the overall health of Regina’s Urban Forest which includes trees and shrubs in boulevards, residential street trees and trees in parks and other open space. This position consists of general tree maintenance. The typical duties in Forestry include: planting trees and follow-up watering, tree pruning, tree removals, chipping and stumping. In most cases, shop and equipment maintenance tasks will also be assigned. 

Education & Experience:

  • Experience using chainsaws and pruning saws
  • Aerial truck operations and brush chipper experience
  • Valid 1A or 3A licence and ISA Certification is considered an asset but not a requirement

Typical Rate of Pay:

  • $24.19 per hour, after successful completion of training

Pest Control

Job Duties: This position consists of general labour maintenance involving insect, weed and animal control. There are several pest programs that include: mosquito control, tree spraying, gopher control and herbicide application.

Education & Experience:

  • Experience with insect, weed, animal control is preferred
  • Valid Pesticide Applicators Licence is an asset but not a requirement

 Typical Rate of Pay:

  • $16.34 per hour, with opportunities to advance to $22.94 per hour, once obtaining a valid Pesticide Licence 

Horticulture

Job Duties: This position consists of general labour duties which include: flower bed planting and maintenance, but could also include litter-picking, string trimming, irrigation system operation, painting, turf management, tree and shrub planting and maintenance, rototilling, weeding and cleaning maintenance shops.

Education & Experience:

  • Experience planting flowers and knowledge of plant species is preferred
  • Completion of some horticultural courses are an asset but not a requirement 

Typical Rate of Pay:

  • $16.34 per hour, with opportunities to advance to $22.94 per hour, depending on operational needs 

Golf Course Maintenance

Job Duties: This position consists of general golf course maintenance duties at 2 championship golf courses located in King’s Park, an 18 hole executive course, an 18 hole par 3 and the Leslie Lawn bowling greens located in Regina.

Education & Experience:

  • Experience in golf course maintenance, irrigation, operating turf equipment and string trimmers
  • Valid Pesticide Applicators Licence is an asset but not a requirement

Typical Rate of Pay:

  • $16.34 per hour, with opportunities to advance to $22.94 per hour, depending on operational needs
